Australia’s fencing and gate sector is a critical part of our built environment, delivering safety, security and amenity across residential, rural and commercial spaces. Yet, despite its vital role, fencing remains one of the few construction trades without nationally recognised qualifications.
This gap in formal training is placing strain on the industry. Inconsistent skill levels, safety concerns, and a lack of clear career pathways are making it harder to attract and retain the skilled workers we need.
Fencing Industry Australia has taken the lead with the Fencing Industry Skills Pathway Initiative, a national effort to build fit-for-purpose qualifications aligned with real-world needs. With strong support from contractors, suppliers and training providers, this initiative is designed to:
Establish formal training benchmarks across the trade
Deliver hands-on, job-ready skills
Improve safety, professionalism and workforce capability
A key achievement has been the launch of the Agriculture and Rural Fencing Skill Set (AHCSS00191), already being delivered nationally and successfully piloted at TAFE NSW in Orange.
The message is clear: national qualifications are essential if our industry is to meet future demand, lift standards and secure its place as a skilled trade. We’re now calling on government and industry partners to help take the next step.
Together, we can build a stronger, safer, and more recognised fencing and gate industry.
